It's an experiment to trade in one detector on another, but I traded in my Garrett GTI 1500 on a new Safari. I received the Safari yesterday, assembled it and tested it indoors with a few coins. The "flute sound" will take some work to learn, but my impression is that this is a powerful detector that will find lots of overlooked coins. I noticed a piece of plastic that covers the entire face plate, including the touchpads. Is this supposed to remain in place, or just there for protection while shipping? Also, it takes a bit of force to insert a 1/4" earphone plug. Is that normal? It is supposed to both rain and snow on Sunday here in Portland, OR, but I will take the Safari to a nearby park for an "introductory session."

I sold my GTI 2500 and bought one, so we are in the same boat. I have found that it is a completely different breed than my Garrett. I had a problem with batteries, got a batch of bad ones, but now I think I am coming on. The sounds are critical so learn them if you don't learn anything else. And be prepared to dig about 3" deeper than you are use to with the 1500. Monty

That's the protective coating just so they don't scratch it while they are assembling it at the factory. You can remove it if you wish, but I actually left mine on for a long time on my SE Pro and it worked great as a screen protector. Just tape around the housing with narrow painters tape to seal the crack between the protective overlay and the housing, or it will start to peel up and dirt will get in there.

I think the 1/4" jack deal is normal... it loosens up in time.

How's it going so far Dan? I think I am finally getting the hang of mine, but time will tell. Monty
