To all Explorer users,
I have a nearly new Explorer II heading my way today. I would like to hear any advice you might have from your Explorer usage, any tips for set up and programming, etc. I know it will take quite a bit of time to master this machine and I am willing to commit to that; however, anyone have any beginner insights that can help me diminish the learning curve?
Thanks in advance.

I would keep it very simple using the factory preset on the smartfind screen and just see how it works for you. Adjust the threshold to just audible and leave it at that for a while and get a feel for how the detector performs.
Its a very different machine from most out there but if you give it a chance you will most likely be very happy with the performance.
Your looking for repeatable signals no matter what your looking for whether its jewelry, coins or relics. I mention this because the Explorer series always seems to be "talking" as you hunt with them and you have to be able to seperate out signals from the talk, at least thats how I see it.
Good luck with it, youve got one of the best on the market!

Congrats on the machine!..............keep it in factory defaults. The only thing I would touch if I were you is the gain. I'd crank it up to 7 or 8. The default is too low. Take your time and give it time. This machine requires it. The PP'ing will take a little while to get used to also.

Daryl (Turtleman) is in good hands over here. I took him out last week to a well known park for some instruction.
Remember, the Explorer is a machine that rewards md'ers the more they use it. So don't get discouraged too soon, and be looking for another machine.

Example: that day, Daryl and I had the same setup on our machines. Our take: Daryl, a few wheats. Me: 4 silver and 12 wheats. We're all newbies at the beginning. In time, the Explorer will reward you tenfold.

A couple of things that Daryl learned on that day of instruction, that I'm sure he would agree to were:

1. The importance of a target probe. I think he will be getting a sunray X1 very soon.
2. Trying to memorize the tones. Everytime I had him listen to a real deepie with his machine, he was able to hear it, but was soon forgetting how it sounded to be able to find one on his own. Many times he called me over to listen to one of his signals, but I told him it was going to be iron, or shallow clad. A couple of times, though, he found two deep wheats.

It's going to take a little time, but you will get better each time you get out there, Daryl. Let me know when you can get out for another detecting trip.

Dan

Lucky Dog you Daryl! Taking 1 on 1 instruction from the Capt! :) I agree with you Dan, the machine does reward the user.
