Fact or fiction: buttons made to hide gold coins

I read somewhere that during the war, ladies would wrap cloth around gold coins and make buttons out of them for their dresses in order to hide them from the soldiers. Has anyone else ever heard of that? Has me thinking is all.

I've read similar accounts of Southern women doing this during the Civil War. It was to fool the invading North and to allow some security on forced marches. Ladies could carry some gold like this. Have no idea if it's true but it reads so plausible I have to think some woman did this.

I would not think to check a button on a dress or jacket to see it was gold. This would have worked I would think. They would have gotten past me.
