So, I went and dumped some halves today, the coin machine rejected a 2000-d half dollar twice so I put it in my pocket and didnt think much more about it, then about an hour later, I heard something weird in my pocket with some other change (kind of like if you put a silver half dollar in your pocket a couple normal "clad" quarters. that distinctive clank it would make). Only this was very different than the sound of silver. When I reached in my pocket to find out what was making the "weird" noise, I was surprised to see it was the half dollar. I dropped it on a counter, and was shocked. It sounds plastic. upon closer inspection, it is very light but looks exactly like any other half dollar, has a reeded edge, has every feature you would see on a half dollar, and it looks real... Do any of you have any thoughts on what it could be? I will update this post a bit later when I can weigh it. I know it is way light though. I am very tempted to tear into it, and see what is inside. I just have a hard time believing someone would fake this coin (doing so without making it metal especially)., so my next thought is, whats inside it? I just looked very close at it again, and on the back of the coin looks almost as if it is a sticker placed onto a round blank or something. I also noticed that it (the reverse) is about 150 degrees off its correct placement (rotation) (I dont know how to say that, so that is my best guess.).

Any thoughts on what I should do? Or what I have? It came out of a brinks box I ordered last week.

Almost certainly a magicians coin, there is a foreign coin inside. Don't tear it apart, but drop it on its edge a few times and it should pop out, it's a cool thing to find, post pics when you open it

ya you should be able to possibly rotate it with your thumb, thats how the one i found opened up.

I agree with the others. Its a magician's coin. The easiest way to open it is to put it in a glass. Cover the opening to the glass with your hand and shake vigorously. It'll pop open within a few shakes.

Be sure to use a thick enough glass. Some magician coins are stubborn. I've broken mason jars "opening" magician coins so be careful.

I will try this glass jar appraoch. I am a bit skeptical that it is a magicians coin, just cause I cant imagine them being this hard to open. How the heck do they do it while keeping people distracted at the same time? I guess that is part of the "magic". Have any of you guys found a coin inside yours? Can you hear it shake or move around if there was a coin in there?

I just use a thick plastic tumbler instead of glass. Has worked every time...so far anyway.

what do you guys do with the magicians coins? I am guessing there is some sort of value to them, since they cant be to easy to make. Even if it is five bucks, it might be worth selling. Have any of you ever sold a magicians coin?

Magician's coin.

I've found exactly ten (10) in my 2+ yrs of hunting. The foreign coin inside has always been either a British Large Penny or a Mexican 20 centavos (1940's - 1970's version). I wonder if anyone else has found a different foreign coin inside other than these two???

Man, be careful with the glass. I too have cracked one (Mason jar) and I suffered a little glass cut. I have gone to using a thick plastic water bottle/thermos. But here's a little trick -- put the coin in your freezer for 5-10 minutes, doesn't take long for the metal to get real cold. This seems to expand or contract the different metals and then vigorously shaking cracks apart the two pieces easily.

Thinking now I did get one other different version...it was a half with a quarter inside and a dime inside that. It was excellent workmanship and I do believe someone else found one of these on here some time back.

Magician's coins go for like $19.95 online. That includes a plastic ring called a bang ring to separate the two pieces, as well as instructions on performing the Scotch and Soda coin magic trick.

I hope I am adding these pics correctly. I really want to say how glad I am that I found Tnet, the amount of knowledge you guys all have collectively is amazing. I "popped" open my "fake" half dollar. Of course you all were right in informing me it was a magicians coin.. :notworthy:

I have the exact same one Doc!

The trick us called "scotch and soda" and it is one of the best gimmicked coin tricks out there. A serious head turner once you know how to do the routine. As stated, it is not cheap. I had many of these throughout the years, long before I knew anything about coins. Funny how I now have found 2 and for .50 to boot!

Scotch & Soda, Scotch & Soda, for years I've heard of this trick but no one would ever explain it. There are many versions but here's one example:
