Our licence to do this land finishes at the end of this month. So we wanted one last go at the low yield Roman/Saxon Site (only had a about 20 scrappies & 2 Sceat) before we called it quits. We knew it would be a 1 good find (hoping for a sceat but knowing it was unlikely) or a nothing day which is not the type of odds we choose very often, but as we will not be returning it was our last hoorah!
Cru'dad started the hunt by getting the hammered on the way to the site in no-man's land
, followed by the sceat on his 2nd run of gridding the site. It then went pretty dead & back to what we expected, no complaints there.
5 Hours;
Large Roman Nail
Lead Sun Dial bit
Tudor Button
Broken Jetton
4 Scrappies
Top of a 17th C Spoon
Smallest Saxon Strap-end I ever seen!
Nice 1568 Sixpence - Lizzy I
Saxon Sceat circa 710AD
Sceat - ''This a good example of Series A3, which is a Kentish coinage of the 670s to680s.
Here is a link to the new EMC wesbite: https://emc.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk.If you go the Advanced Search page and select Series A3 under 'Type' you will find records of 40 coins.''
Santa visited the Site a little early.
