We used to buy bags of $2000 Half Dollars from the banks when I was a kid and search for silvers. Do they still do the large clear bags of half dollars or are they all boxes now? Our local banks all have said we can order 500 coin boxes, but nothing about the bags.

This was 16 years ago of course, but do they still offer that?

Thanks!

Wow! I never had that kinda wealth as a kid! I can’t relate.👍🏼💰💰💰

I highly doubt you can buy them in bags today. Just the logistics of shipping and storing them would be difficult. My guess is you were getting bags from coin counting machines as I know those would sort into plastic bags. You might find a bank that does coin counting and ask. Are you sure these were $2000 plastic bags? If my math is correct, that would be over 100 lbs per bag. That seems like way to much for employees to move around or the bag not to rip.

Interesting. I've only seen the $1000 clear bags off coin machines. Other than that, just the $500 boxes they order

I would guess they were $1000 bags with 2000 coins in them and not $2000 bags.

To my knowledge, you can't order bags, but the ability to do so would ultimately depend on the armored service and the bank having them available. Usually ordering is only in $500 boxes.

Although less do it now, some banks will sell their bags directly off the coin machines either when full or sometimes when partially full. Note that buying those bags comes with a big caveat and that is that the count may not be accurate. Usually there is junk in the half dollar bag or coins that aren't halves that got counted as halves. In most cases, the count is to the buyers detriment based on personal experience buying said bags in the past. The downside of complaining about a miscount is you likely going to cause them to no longer sell bags. Too many complaints about inaccuracy is why most banks no longer will sell bags. To find a bank that sells bags, you'll probably have to ask around at a number of banks to find one if there is even one in your area.

Federal Reserve Bags

Aside from the staff at the Federal Reserve
the Board employs nearly 3000 people in Washington D.C.
I am sure there are a few old "bags" working there. :laughing7:
