I visited several banks last Thursday to dump coins only. At each bank the tellers were were saying that they have never seen so many people bringing in coins. They weren't complaining, these were my friendly dump banks, just remarking on the number of people feeding coins to the machines.
In fact, at each bank, there were people, dumping coin,in front of me, and waiting as I was dumping, which is unusual.
I suspect with all of this coin dumping there may be some good boxes being put together out there. Maybe not half dollar boxes, but certainly other denominations.

From what I have seen, banks that have the coin counters out in the lobby (self serve) tend to have the most users dumping coins. I believe it is because all the customers are aware of the coin counting service.

The banks that have the machines in the back don't advertise the fact that they have a free coin counter. I have known many non CRHers here who don't even know that many banks have free machines. When I tell them that many banks offer free coin counting machines (I don't tell them I CRH) they seem surprised.

Some might postulate that the bad economy is causing people to cash in old hoards of coins that they had for years. This may be true, but the economy has been bad for a long time now and I imagine that many hoards have already been cashed in. Maybe those in higher income brackets who had stashes they wanted to hold on to are now cashing in as the bad economy is finally hitting them, but the average to lower income groups have probably exhausted their coin hoards already over the past few years.

Jim,
It could be a Connecticut thing. Being a wealthy State, the bad economy is going to hit us last, and may in fact be doing so now.

I see people dumping change a lot too

I went past sat. to a main branch with 2 coin counters, was very busy. must have seen 10 ppl come in to use them. one was broken though. but mostly kids and older people.

Well, if you guys read one of my posts, a friend's son just dumped over $1500.00 dollars of silver to a bank to pay for a wedding and rings. She had no idea I collected silver. I would have paid her (or her future son-in-law) quite a bit more than face value!

you just never know,

apush :read2:

The 2 CoinStar in our local Kroger are usually busy every time I go by them, it amazes me how dim people are to pay what is it over %8 to cash in coins- I just spend as many of them as can they are after all, ca$h!

the other day at the bank i had 3 thats right 3 people waiting 2 use the counter after me! of course while dumping the bag had to fill up, only irritating the people more! :laughing9:
