Took this at the cattail marsh behind me, as the sun was going down on this wonderful day we had. These Red Wing Blackbird are really starting arrive now and they'll be singing from sunup to sundown. I think the males show up before the females? I'm not sure where they build their nest and I think it must be just above the surface of the water or some place below the tops of the cattails. I can't think of many predators that could get to the nest these birds build, as it's so thick with cattails and the water below to get to them. The cattails grow taller then me and I'm 6'.2", so that makes it difficult for any birds of prey to get at them also. I guess maybe a Bull Snake could penetrate deep into the thick vegetation? I do know there is a time the males can get pretty aggressive and they'll fly after you or any hawk that comes to close. If a Blue Heron comes around all the males in the marsh will come out to attack that guy.
