Killer finds buddy. I wish I could have come up this morning but too much going on around the house to get away. You're on a roll with the Cannel Coal Pendants. Two in less than a week is hard to beat. I really like the Shell Pendant too and then a Shell Disc and a Marginella to boot. That's a very impressive day considering what shape the fields are in. I'm going to try to get up there on Monday morning if I can get away from the house for a while and see if you guys left anything. lol

Great job Joe!!!!

Nice finds and good pics too

Stryker, my buddy Joe lives in Kentucky, but those pieces were found at a Ft Ancient site we hunt in Lawrence county Ohio.

Here in Pa we find the same items on our Monongahela sites which are related to the Ft Ancient focus. The marginella bead is especially interesting as it ties all of the sites together considering their origin which I am told is the Gulf of Mexico making them a salt water shell, occasionally we find beads made from the whelk which is a much larger shell that had to be processed by grinding down the outside until the tubular core was exposed and drilling it, a time consuming process. There are many other shells in the Gulf which could have served the same purpose but the marginella shows up in the many thousands over hundreds of years of occupation on countless sites up the Mississippi drainage. Did this shell have special significance which we do not know or was it just an easily made decoration that could be transported long distances in great quantities? Any thoughts?
Does anyone know the farthest extent of their travels...Canada maybe?
Has anyone found any pendants made from fresh water pearls, they had to run into them from their mussel food source. Opinions appreciated.

Rege-PA, I found quite a few Marginella along the beach when I was at Mrytle Beach a few years back. I was really surprised that I found them there because I had always thought they were the Gulf region as well. They were a little bigger than the ones we find here, but they were definitely Marginellas. We also find the Whelk Shell Beads here, just not as frequent as the other types. My brother found two huge ones on at the same dig site that I was surface hunting this spring. I have never found any freshwater pearls on any of our sites, but I did hear about a guy who found a pot at an excavation somewhere in the area that was clear full of freshwater pearl beads.

Here some pics of my brother Whelk Shell Beads. Two individual pictures and then both together. As you can see from the quarter these babies are huge.
