Field guide for historical artififacts

Hello I was wondering if anybody could recommend a good field guide for identifying historical artifacts (e.g. determining age of a horse shoe). Thank you

Wow! It would have to be a 70 volume set.

I think there's a good one by Ivor Hume that covers colonial artifacts. Another great book is by fellow TNetter Bill Dancey about colonial artifacts and coins from Virginia. It's probably my favorite metal detecting related book with great explanations, stories and pictures.
