and got denied!:BangHead: Theres an old 1900s house about to be torn down that is church property near my house and I went and asked all polite like and their response was "I dont think itd be worth your while, someone from our congregation already went through it" A SWING AND A MISS!!! Im officially out of ideas until i can muster up some courage or something to ask property owners if i can MD their land. Sucks too, my 12yr old is losing interest fast, oh well all good things must come to an end i guess:dontknow:

My friend and I got the exact same response a few weeks back. Without missing a beat my friend said, "Mind if we try anyway?". The guy said "sure". He found his best Indian head that day.

Noone wants you digging up their yards, but old decrepit buildings and fields seem fair game to me to ask. I get turned down alot to. Even got turned down by own mother-in-law :tongue3:.
I still keep asking here and there however. Eventually, someone will cave. (Going to try my mother-in-law again in the Fall :laughing7:).

Hey, take your son with you when you ask...that's what I do and we have only been turned down once. Actually, the old man of the house said go ahead but his wife came out and said it would not be a "good idea". ???

No's don't really hurt.....you'll find more Yes's the more you ask

You have to listen to yourself....
" Sucks too, my 12yr old is losing interest fast

Use this line in asking and explain that you want to have some quality time with your 12 yr old cause he is interested in it. Sugar coat it a bit too.

I guess saying, "My detector can beat up his detector", wouldn't be wise? : )

That sucks seeing prime detecting land and not being able to touch it, but like everyone is saying, keep asking and use the boy if you have to! : )

Thanks for the tips guys, Im not losing interest in any way shape or form. I guess i got the newb apprehension and it sucks cause our good spots dried up as far as i can tell and we were on a roll. I nabbed 2 indian heads 1870 and 1904 and 8 silvers (mercs, rosies, and a washington). I think i just worry that people think im gonna trash their land and they dont understand the hobby. Hell i even considered telling the pastor id make a donation to the church if he let me lol

Might work-depends on the type of church though : )

I assume you took you 12 year old with you? If not, you would be better taking him & asking on his behalf.

Better yet let the child do the asking, explaining that you will be there to make sure all is safe and will be better than when you first got there. Do NOT forget to let them know that you will pick up and dispose of all trash found during the hunt. jm2cents worth. ......................HH

I get owners all the time tell me you wont find anything because someone already detected it before. And I always say, thats ok, because noone gets it all, would you mind if I tried my luck? And 99% of people will say sure, assuming you wont find anything.

When I am told it has been hunted before, it gives me extra motivation to find something the other guy missed!

No better source on this subject than Goes4Ever. :icon_thumright:

I'm with Goes4ever. I seldom get turned down and just a few weeks ago got permission to hunt a somewhat small yard. The guy said to go ahead and try but his Dad hunted the yard some years ago so there probably isn't anything to find. I could hardly take two steps without finding a coin. The total was 86 coins including several wheats and 2 silver dimes. NOW it is hunted out. LOL. The Etrac is pretty hard to beat. Just keep knocking.

you could do your best James Cagney impersonation like "yea, see, we're gonna detect your place, see, and you're gonna like it. yea"

I wish I could adopt the adage I had heard from someone here in my town, which was: "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission". Obviously, you can see the problem with this, but man, if only it were a half perfect world. Later today I have an area scoped out, it is between two buildings which were original 'old' town fronts. The space is only about four or five feet wide and the length of the building front to back. Hoping first that the store owners allow me, and second, that this space has not changed since the buildings were put there. To add, a lot of people wanting to get off the sidewalk in the front always cut through this space. I am hopeful. :)

Cjon455, yeah, don't give up! :)

I am about to don a shirt or sign that reads, "Will do chores for permission to treasure hunt your property". I have seriously thought about offering to do odd jobs for people for permission to hunt. Then, you'd probably get some unbeknownst to you savvy codger that would agree to this, and then when you show him your '1937-D three legger' he goes into the house and blue books it then sums up the two weeks worth of labor you owe him. DAMN...oh well. :/

wow, my venting session got alot of attention lol! I guess im at the next step in my new found hobby. I feel like ive hunted out all the public places that i know of except for the tot lots. And now i guess its time to start getting permission to hunt private lands. I know of a town nearby littered with 1800s houses. Even my hometown is but its more city and the people are rude and mostly renters.
