Well, I finally got back to the cave yesterday. It was 60 degrees, finally. I cant tolerate the cold anymore. I only dug for 30 minutes and I found a nice hammer stone. I'm not sure what type of rock, since it is not a native rock to this area. I also found a nice pottery shard, a flake (MPT), a knife and a nother bird point. Enjoy Ray

I hope you find the rest of that pottery- cool stuff, looks to be shell tempered. Other stuff is cool to-

Hey Cannonman. Love the new pic. My daughter is 19. The pottery is shell tempered. I have found some pieces of the shell they used. Apparently they made pottery here because it is loaded with different colored shards, but no whole pieces yet. Thanks Ray

better get back soon something big is about to pop out, good luck

Nice! Can't wait to see more.

Thanks guys and gals. It feels great to be back out. I thank God for the time I have and to do what you love....well I'm very thankful. This disease is kicking my butt. Its great to be able to do what I love and have such a great place to share the excitement. Thank you. Ray

Hiya Ray. I noticed where you're from (not far from me). I go through Siloam most days on my way to work. I live in OK, but work in ARK. If you can show closer pics of the material, I may be able to help you with the identification of it. It looks like a Reeds or a Keokuk variant, they are probably the two most prevalent materials in your area. Nice finds, and hope you get to feeling better.

Matt

A couple of five dollar rocks should not equate to the later in years. Be careful and don't get caught.

to clarify I meant JAIL! People do go to jail for this. I don't agree with it, but it happens.

WoW!!I cant beleive you guys are so blatant about this kind of stuff, especially digging!!!!I dont have a problem with it(well digging I kind of do)but man the feds are just lurking!!!And rest assured they will ruin your day!!!None of my business I know but I know about the horror stories....I didnt even read Lostlakes post,AMEN!!!!!

Man....... after reading some of the post here about Feds and such.... I think i am going to look up the laws where I live. I mean...... Now I feel like I am committing a crime. Is it really against the law to pick up an arrowhead if you find one while walking along a creek? It sounds like it. Hmmmm...... I am going to google the laws now. That would suck...... end up in prison over an arrowhead!

People, I gotta start putting that bow on my back, stik them arrow heads on a stick if I find one, that super glue would work quick, naw, gotta go do what Airborne is doing and study the laws. Gnewt

Once again I am amazed at the misinformation that runs rampant on this board. I strongly encourage that everyone that has or ever will pick up an artifact KNOW THE LAWS. KNOWING THE LAW IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Yes Airborne, if you pick up an artifact in Arkansas even if on a creek you can go to Jail. The state strengthened the tresspassing laws and you do not want to pick up an artifact on any property except that which you own. I have read the laws and had help from the University of Arkansas in interpreting the laws. I am safe under the law unless I uncover human remains. At that point you must stop immediately. So thank you for your concern, but I am fine thank you. So before you go spreading fear and lies, learn the laws!!

I guess we're lucky in Wisconsin because you can pick up all the artifacts you want with the exception of state land. On private land you're fine, with permission from the land owner of course and provided you're not digging any grave sites or anything like that. When I was in school I worked in the regional archaeology center and private collectors were a great help and we never tried to take anything they had, never forced them to give up information, never took anybody's land away, never sent anybody to jail for anything, in fact, we worked closely with some of them to the benefit of both the archaeology center and the private collector. We got to record the location and type of site (helping the overall settlement pattern model we were working on) and the collectors got to learn exactly what they had found and how it tied in with other known sites/ages.
