Hey all,

I had planned on getting a new Tejon but I couldn't pass up the deal I got on this practically new one ($390). It arrived in the mail yesterday so I have yet to get out and give it a try, that and we have a foot of snow >:( .

A bunch of TNetr's and myself have started a new club (Kinzua Country Metal Detecting). It seems that they are all using DFX's, So I'm looking forward to seeing how the ol' Tehon stacks up!

If anyone has any pointers just jot them down!!

Pull-tab Parson,

If you have any specific questions on your newly accquired Tejon let me know and I'll try to help. Joe

What are you looking for specifically?

I use my Tesoro for civil war relic hunting and dig some pretty deep targets, also find some small buckshot that many detectors would pass up because of the small size.

That's awesome! You will be very happy with the Tejon - especially at that price! Once you get used to it, you will find something deep and old every time you go out. I can't believe how it reads coins on edge. I found a buff nick last summer in sod at about 7" on an almost vertical edge. It's a very nice powerful machine.

Now to tempt you to spend more money . . .

If I were you, I would watch for a used 5.75" concentric coil for it - usually about $75. Ask anyone about it, that coil is simply amazing. It's a must have, in my opinion. It gets almost the same depth as the stock coil, is feather light, and pinpoints razor sharp. I use mine in place of stock most of the time.

Thanks for the advice guys,

I do have the intention to purchase the 5.75, I have read a good deal about its worth!

Keep em comin!

You might be hard pressed to find a good used 5.75 as they are so popular.

ya, I haven't seen any, so I will probably pick up a new one

I had the Tejon out for just a little bit tonight, I wanted to work on the ground balancing. Now, just so I'm clear, 6 inches from the ground move the coil to the ground and I should not hear anything is that right? I have done that but if I move the coil at all it squeals a little but if I keep it still it nice and quiet, does this mean that it's balanced (sorry guys I'm new at this)? is it common for it to chatter a little each time I swing it (I'm use to a quiet VID machine)?

Thanks for the input guys

No, you are concerned about the downward motion and if the threshold stays the same. Pump the coil up and down while turning the ground balance knob - when you hear that the threshold tone stays ABOUT the same ON THE WAY DOWN - you are balanced. Sometimes you can't get it perfectly even, but if you turn the knob quickly - you will hear that the sound of perfect balance is pretty obvious. Do like 1/4 turns at a time for each downward motion. You are only concerned about the downward motion, not when you raise it up - b/c you are right, there may be extraneous sounds. If it gets louder or quieter on the downward motion- it needs to be adjusted one way or the other. As you get used to this - some people like me do a slightly positive ground balance and it seems to get even better depth.

There is a video on ground balancing at Tesoro.com

It sounds like you're getting a negative response on the lowering. Make sure you're in a spot that is clear of metal. Adust your threshold to about 1 o'clock and then lower the coil from about 6" to about 1". If the tone disappears, you're getting a negative balance so move the GB knob to the right a little bit and try again. It doesn't take a real big knob adjustment to make a difference. What you're looking for is the same tone at 6" as at 1" if I'm saying this correctly. In the manual, it says there will be no change in the threshold tone as the coil is dropped. This is the balanced response and your machine is ready to hunt.
As someone once stated, the Tejon is like a Vaquero on steroids. It takes a little practice, but once you work with it a little while, it takes longer to talk about GB it as it does to do it.

You might also read the field test and get a few tips there. http://www.tesoro.com/TejonFieldTest.html

Pull-tab Parson,

Well you left some details out. Absolute must, you have got to have a clean 3' X 3' piece of ground under the coil to GB. Make sure your in all metal. Threshold set so you can hear a steady hum. Sensitivity to 9 or 10 on the dial. Do not lower/pump the coil to the ground, come no closer than one inch off the ground.
What do you mean that the detector "squeals" if you move the coil at all? Sounds like you are NOT GBed.

Joe

Hey Joe,

after adjusting the GB, I move the coil to the ground and it's quiet (no sound) but if I move the coil at all (to the left or right) it will squeal. I'm starting to understand that I need to hear the same noise at 1 inch as I do at 6 inches, is this right. From what it sounds like your telling me if its not making any noise then the balance is to low is this right?

Thanks guys,

PTP

What about the other conditions / settings I mentioned in my last reply? Joe

Hey Guys,

I figured it out, I wasn't turning the Theshold up high enough. I read the mannual over and over again and then the light went on!! So I took the ole badger out and sure enough it GBed no problem. I must tell you that I was amazed at the amount of targets that are still in my yard after detecting it with the Prizm III. This thing has some pretty impresive depth ( I can't dig cus th eground is totally frozen, but its as if I had never detected my yard). I did some air testing and couldn't get over how far out I could hold the coins and Iron etc. Wow, I can't wait to get a good thaw so I can recheck my yard and all the other places I have hunted and see what I come up with.

If I have any more questions, I will be sure to ask, thanks for all the help
