Cribbing spike, used to connect timber together. A hole would be drilled, then the spike would be pounded in. Now you have to find a hand held auger that was used to drill the hole.
 

Thanks for your response. Would you say this is 100yrs old or 300 yrs old? The Dutch settled this part off of Long Island in the mid 1600s. There is a lot of iron on the beaches. Usually I don’t dig these targets but I kind of like the idea of finding these old handcut relics.

May be some old non-ferrous items in the area where those spikes were found.

I find them at 1880-1910 sites. I have found a few augers to go with them.
