Ace 250 and Minelab Explorer II
Hi. I am new to metal detecting. I just started three weeks ago. I have found mostly clad and some odds and ends. So far I have found 11 wheat pennies with the oldest dating to 1917. I have not found any silver coins which is what I really am looking for. Last weekend I found my first "real" silver-a .925 pendant of a Mexican sombrero in a nearby park. I have yet to find any rings. My question for those of you with experience is...where do you find most of your rings? In playground areas? In large grassy expanses? At the beaches? In the woods?
I dig everything, including pull tabs with my Ace 250 and assume that there are rings out in these parks as I live near Los Angeles and thus a lot of people. Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Turtleman

Hi Turtleman, and welcome to TNet! I would like to find more silver coins too, but nowadays you have to find old sites that have not been hunted to death. This usually takes research or knowing some people who have property, or asking permission to hunt private land. As far as the rings go, I have found most of mine in the grassy areas of parks and sports fields. I have also found some on the beach. The silver rings are easy to spot...the gold rings are not. Gold rings have a signal in the pull tab range so you have to dig a lot of pull tabs to find the gold.

Welcome to the forum Turtleman...rings can turn up just about anywhere, parks, grass, schools, beaches, you name it, keep at it and you'll find what you're looking for.

Play grounds, state camp grounds, sports fields, have worked for me best. No rings found at the beach as of yet. Much compition at the beach, but some silver coins. Try along river banks where people fish and or swim. Old roads have worked as well.
Good luck PFP

Welcome, & keep looking, Fossis................

About all I can say is that if you put in the time, the goodies will come sooner or later.
Happy hunting.

I have found only three rings.. all at local parks... i think the playground areas get detected more then the large expanses of grass... drive around on weekends.. and look where all the socially competitive soccer mom types sit.. there in lies the gold..

Keep diggn...

Rings are my favorite finds. I found 72 last year and 3 this year. All silver accept 3 of the rings. All of mine are at a local lake parks. I have found them where you would think people sit and layout; as well as, where people are swimming. If you want gold you have to dig everything! If your in a hurry.....you can hunt in coin mode and pick up silver, easy breezy. I think a lot of my success comes from advise I got here on the net. Gridding is the key! I consistenty find jewelry when I take the time to grid the area I want to hunt vs. the butterfly approach. Also, slowing down my swing has helped me...it's not a race. Keep at it! You WILL find a ring soon. HH

hi turtleman welcome to the forum and good luck with your new machine, go watch where people congregate and that is where you will find the rings. Yes you will have to dig some trash, but the goodies will come too

Welcome Turtleman!! Like others have said already.....rings can show up anywhere. Typically places that have sand or that are grassy. Where there's people, there's stuff to be found! That's the great part of this hobby, the ultimate surprise of finding something that makes you wonder "How'd that get here!!?" I found this little jewel last month under some monkey bars at a small out of the way park! Good luck to you and we're glad to have you aboard!!

Happy Hunting,
Moon

Yup.
Rings can show up almost anyplace. I agree with all the posts above. Try not to overthink locations. Maybe you should just experiment and see
what you find in the beginning.
The longer I do this the less sense it makes to me, (in regards to why things are where they are).

Here's a tip though. Great big ball fields usually have rings all over the place. Just pick a starting point and an ending point and swing straight across the field. Then do it again in another direction. Swing the coil slow and steady and dig everything. You will find a ring eventually.

Remember also that rings are pretty light, and they sometimes get blown by leaf blowers into ditch areas and against fences.(on the sidelines).

Good luck!

I agree with fd3615, drive around on weekends and look where the people are sitting and watching their relatives play soccer & other sports. Here in Orange County (Ca) you can't go more than a mile w/out seeing such things. Also, keep in mind to look where they walk to get back to their vehicles. I have found 3 rings just by raking a gravel parking lot, (people have to pull out keys to drive and a non- asphalt/concrete surface doesn't let 'em know what they lost). ;D

yes, rings will almost always come up as pulltabs. I find most of my rings ingrassy expanses. Make sure to go right around trees, because some people lose to rings there. My suggestion is to do a grid on a really good area. Pick out an area you think is good, then walk in striaght, paralel paths with overlapping swings to get everything.

Turtleman, it looks like your heading in the right direction, keep digging those PULL TABS, one will become a ring before you know it ;D

anywhere where there are people you will find them just keep looking and yours will show up soon ;)

Hi Turtle guy. I've been doing this for a long time. I can count my gold rings in the ground with 1 hand. In the water not on the beach I have found a few hundred. They put the sun tan loution on go in the water and thats all she wrote for her ring. Any beach or pond people swim in has silver and gold rings.
