I think your button is a civilian imitation button that was popular in the 1960-70s
 

I'd take those find any day. I love digging artifacts like that. As far as the button goes my buddy dug one almost identical to yours that we've yet to identify. Does your button have any back marking? That's the key to identifying them. Size can tell you possible use. i.e. cuff, collar, bodice etc. the are some other key facts to note as well. Judging from you picture I'd say you have a two piece design with a looped back. Location of the find might also help determine civilian or military. Thanks for sharing.

Nice finds. Does that button have a back mark? if so that could date it. Is it a two piece or one piece? Or if you could can you post a pic of the back of the button
 

From your photo, the design certainly looks like that of a Civil War era navy button to me. Nice find. Is there any gilt on it? Can you post a photo of the back? Here is a button I found a while back with the same front. The back says Jos. Starkey London.
