Headed over Sunday to one of my field sites (1873+ home site) for more gridding and iron removal. Was pleased to dig my first "fatty" IH, a decent 1864. I was surprised when it popped out since it rang lower. I didn't realize it was a fatty yet, and didn't know they rang lower due to the nickel in them. Also dug clock pieces, an umbrella part, child's broken teacup, and a decorative round object. :icon_scratch:

Still spitting snow in mid April. :protest:

Nice finds Anne,

I am surprized too when certain targets ring at certain numbers, but I have attributed it to this, and it seems to be correct. The more Patina the lower the signal ?

That's my experience....tell me yours.

Glad your getting out in the good, and early spring season.

Rick

I still have nightmares about the cornfield. When I saw your field picture it brought it all back! LOL

Worth it though, wonderful coin!

Congrats!

HH!

Way to go Anne, looks like a good day, nice IH. HH Eric

LOL! I love my fields. :happy3: Yes, they can be very challenging to hunt and they don't always give a lot, but when they do, it is old and sweet.

Thanks, Rick.
First, mid April seems late compared to last year. :tongue3:
The fatty IH's (1859- 64) are 12% nickel, unlike the later IH's. Thus the low tone. (11 on my Explorer) But you are likely correct on the patina idea. I dug a semi key date IH (1876) last weekend and it rang lower than I expected. Unfortunately it lost the fight with fertilizer.

Very nice finds

Great digs! Love the relics, and that fatty IH is AWESOME!

Hi Anne!

Nice find on the fatty...congrats--I would rub a very thin coat of bees wax on it! I like the decorative piece too--maybe put it on the What Is It? forum to get an ID. Nice to see you posting :icon_thumright:

Hi Erik-- I did post the decorative item on the What Is It? forum and Breezie quickly ID'd it as a pewter child's saucer from a tea set.

Funny, because I also found (eyeballed) what I think is a broken child's tea cup on the same hunt. I'll have to return and find the rest of the set! :laughing7:

Congrats on the fatty! And the child's tea saucer is really cool too. Nice work!

I'd love to hunt some fields! Sadly all of them around here are only about a decade old, and the real old ones are fenced off as a heritage site.
