Digging at a city block tearout in OKC and out popped this button. Gave me a nickel signal on my XPD1, using the 9" round HF Coil. I thought it an old button until I showed it to my hunting partner, and he explained to me what it was. I was super surprised and thrilled to make this find. IHP is only my 3rd. 1905. Has nice relief. The other piece is a Folgers Coffee Token.

Still learning the relic side of hunting.

Just curious, does it have a legible backmark and what did your buddy tell you about it?

Very nice button. Keep us posted.

Well done on the button recovery.

I was told that this was a civil war era button, but also told this could be from then through 1870's.
Still old and glad I found it.
I am still learning the relic hunt and ignorant when it comes to these type of relics.
When I found it I thought just an old button. When my partner started cleaning it, he got pretty excited and i did as well.
Would you have more info on it?
I cleaned the back of the button a little more before sending the pic to you. About the best I can do for now. If you need addtional pics to ID, let me know.

Thx for the help

I am drawing a blank on that variation of the general service button with the wing tips pointing slightly downward. I think your backmark reads "Horstmann Bros & Co. Phila" and would date from 1860-1880.

I agree on the reading of the backmark, but no idea on the date range.

Your US Army Enlisted-man's "eagle button" is definitely the 1875-1902 version. The key ID-clue is the shield is "highly raised" on the eagle's chest. On the civil war era version, the shield is more-or-less flush with the eagle's chest. See the photo below, showing from left to right, the 1902-to-present version, the 1875-1902 version, and the 1854-74 version.
