Spent the afternoon at my favourite site...huge area and always good for targets. The corn came down so I stuck to that area which is where I found the scabbard hanger this past spring. As soon as I saw this I thought it might be part of the scabbard and got some confirmation from a couple fellow enthusiasts! Will be back to find some more next weekend!

A one target hunt...I'll assume it was a quickie.

I got out today for a bit too.

A one target hunt...I'll assume it was a quickie.

I got out today for a bit too.

I was out for 3 hours...with 5 targets to show for it...none with the exception of this one worth posting about. I'm definitely planning on going back and scouring the area between where I found the two pieces...got to be more to it!

Pretty cool piece. Congrats on getting it ID"ed.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to the age...Crusader maybe?

That's a nice save Romeo!
I like to say that I'd dig 100 pennies if I might find one silver! :laughing7:

Romeo, still pondering this very cool find with a bump; Keeping in mind that European military swords were usually treated more as revered objects, and were usually passed down through generations to be admired over the mantel, other swords such as thick bladed gentlemen's hunting swords were not always, but were passsed down and used. Assuming we haven't blundered terribly and this is a chape, then odds coupled with the size of the chape would say your sword would probably have been a civilian wide bladed hunting sword (maybe even pressed into service?) It's always tempting to push dates forward, but still, when dating this thing I don't think it's date would not have to conform to the dates of your buttons and coins (1700's), but could pre-date them as something post-medieval (maybe mid to late 1600's) lost at the time of your buttons. Can't wait to hear from the folk who see these on a daily basis who can match this find of your's!

certainly a nice old piece…hope you get out more this fall...

Great find bud. That's a beauty with a great story I'm sure

Sure got a real old look to it. I'm sure the date would be close to the age of the site
To have five hours to go detecting, that would be sweet

Nice, Looks really old too.
Congrats.
