I had some time to get out yesterday for a little while to hunt, but finding a diggable area was tough. I trekked out to the woods with my mini d-handle shovel I've yet to use (since every time I want to it's too frozen). The woods were hard as a rock everywhere I tested. Even the top leaves were like cement still. I wonder why this "warmup" hadn't affected the woods earlier...but not long enough to stick around. On my way home I stopped by my "wheatie park" where I have suspiciously pulled close to a hundred wheaties since getting the M6 and even some I got with the Ace 250 back then- but NEVER a silver coin. I have been here a bunch of times and each time I go I just KNOW it will be my silver day. The park isn't very old and all the wheaties I find are 40's-50's era. I'm not looking for Barbers. A Rosey would be nice. But no cigar every time I go. Anyway, most of the park was still covered in snow, but there was a little section about the size of two city backyards that were very soft and diggable and without snow cover. Boy, was it nice to dig in the turf and not have to jump up and down on the digger. The sound of the digger slicing through the grass and roots was like music to my ears!

In just under three hours, I did find eight wheaties, all were between 5-8 inches deep. The oldest is a '41. It was fun to be out there and dig these, also got some clad and a dog collar. No silver, but...oh well. Next time I guess. It was just nice to be out there in the sunlight, without having to dig in single-digit temps in the snow in short increments.

Hope everyone here was able to get out and enjoy this weekend's weather. As of now, it is spitting rain slightly...I'll be inside watching the Cubs lose.

Joe

Glad you got out. You had a better day then I had. But too bad the ground does not act like a bank in the sense that you could deposit 100 wheat and pull out 4 silver quarters, but alas, your first finds of the year... I am surprised the woods you've been hitting are frozen :dontknow: All the woods I've been to have been fine.

One of these days bud your gonna get a silver from that place!!! :icon_pirat:

You talkin' 'bout Joe's Wheatie Farm again?!?

Good hunt Joe, I'd be happy with the soft ground, let alone a few wheaties for "icing".

Yeah, you did 8 times better than me today. Just got a '56 wheat,, my birthyear, so I guess its worth more than just another crappy date. Spent an hour in the rain at my Morgan spot trying to get on board for the year, but just ending up going home wet. :dontknow:

WTG, Joe!!!

It's only a matter of time and coil size before you find a silver there....

I didn't get out today, but Friday, Mrs. KD & I went to a movie. Halfway through, I went to the concession stand to get a refill on popcorn & saw a wheat penny face down on the glass. I showed it to the kid working there and he said to keep it. So that's my oldest find for the week, a hardly worn '56 D. :-\

Wow! Great first hunt Joe! Either someone went through cherry picking those sweet high tones, or you just haven't hit 'em yet. That's unbelievable to have not found silver there yet. I hope you do keep going back and find some though ;-)

Wish you would have got a silver Joe. Great job getting the wheaties. Sunny dry days will be here soon you will be stacking the silvers up in piles!

Joe, respectable hunt in my book. . . the silver's there

Glad to here you got into the dirt Joe.

WTG on those finds ... Silver will come soon....

Boy this killing me not being able to hunt....
