I got to do the "Happy Dance" today! I found a Large Matron Head Cent on privately owned property in Charlestown, IN. The property is just off the square downtown and the building was erected in the early 1800's. The coin was found 6 inches deep next to a large tree. I'm not sure of the year yet. I'm afraid to clean it too much. Any advice? I'm gonna attempt to add pics, but I'm having trouble.

That’s sweet! There will be a lot of different recommendations for cleaning coins but I’ve had decent results by just using soap and water and a soft toothbrush. I then usually use this ms 70 stuff I got years ago and roll a q tip with this stuff back and forth on the coin. When it’s sufficiently cleaned to my liking, I soak it in olive oil for about two weeks and then wash off with soap and water.

Congratualtions on the old copper! :occasion14:

IMHO: Do not use water! Try using a dry tooth brush or tooth pick to work around the date. Take your time. Good Luck! :icon_thumleft:

Why wouldn’t you use water? I’ve used soap and water on every coin I’ve ever found with no detrimental effects.

Thanks. Did I identify it correctly? It is a Large Matron Head Cent right?

That is a beauty. Congrats

Nice large cent! :icon_thumright: The CTX is really nice. I like mine and it found lots of stuff. Keep digging!

I only use the Andre's pencils and even skip soap and water. Toothpics work well also. I have saved many a large cent by manually instead of chemically removing gunk. I have also ruined a lot of coins with chemicals. Look at youtube's Aquachigger video on ruining large cents. He convinced me.

Thanks for the advice. The AT Pro I used before I got the CTX was a great machine, but the CTX’s ability to discriminate selectively based on Ferrous and Conductivity values is amazingly accurate. I am truly impressed. Wonderful depth too.
