First ring with the Safari & it's a HONKER + other goodies...
Been a little bit since my last post. Actually, this has been my best post in ages. Between the looooong Winter, the lack of rain here in NJ, the blazing hot temps AND me trying to learn my new Safari, it's been a tough hunting season so far
Coming off my love affair with my old MXT 300, it's been brutal trying to get the tones down on the Safari - and more importantly, what they mean. Think I'm starting to crack the code though
All of the finds below represent my last 3 or 4 hunts. Thought I'd wait until I had a nice batch of goodies to justify a post rather than doing it piecemeal.
I finally found another ring
It's been a long while. Back in 2009. The ring below is my first with the Safari
And it's a beauty. I decided to hit a park about 4 blocks from my house today. It NEVER gives up anything. I have never sectioned the park off and hunted it, but, always just zipped around. Well, today was another nothing hunt. Just clad. I was meandering as usual. At one point, I even muttered to myself, "gosh it's been a while since I found a ring". I also remember thinking "how come I never find any of those neat class rings?". About an hour later, I figured I'd move a bit since I was finding just clad. I randomly walked across a little jogging path with my machine still on till I got to the grass on the other side. Almost as soon as the detector hit the grass, I got a sweet sounding 39. So, I'm thinking quarter or trash since it wasn't that deep. Well...
From not more than an inch under the soil, out popped a United States Navy ring. My first class/graduation type ring. I about had a heart attack. Don't get me wrong, I found other beautiful rings before, but, a class type ring was high on my list. NEVER thought I'd find it today seeing how slow the hunt was going and in THAT park. Can anyone tell me what it's made from? It comes up as a solid 39 or 40 on my Safari, but, it looks badly worn. I cannot get a date, name or any marking on it since it's so worn and dirty. Any tips on how to clean this baby up?? There also appears to be a ruby stone, but, I don't think it's real. The "stone" is a bit scratched up.
The skeleton key I found a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty deep. Don't recall what it rang up as on my Safari. Found it in another park here in NJ with a lot of history. It is my first whole skeleton key - had others that were broken. I also found the boy scout bolo there too.
The merc is a cool story. One of my regular hunting buddies mentioned to me that they were ripping up the ground at a school that date's back to the 1930's. As soon as I heard that, I said, "let's get there fast." About an hour into the hunt, out popped the merc - a 1927. Looks terrible with a black soot on there, but, mercs are hard to come by here in NJ...at least for me.
P.S. - Seems like all of my good finds weren't that deep. Not more than a few inches. A two center, a gold ring with a sapphire stone, etc. Just proves my theory that it's the SPOT more than the machine.
Anyways, thanks for reading. Happing hunting
