Hunting near the A5, Watling St with our 2 year old nephew we found a few things.

An old spoon marked "Rustless Sipelia Nickel Plate Sheffield England". A belt buckle, another old button and our first ring!

Any information anyone has on this ring would be appreciated. I'm not sure of what it is made of or any clue on a date. It looks like there is a swallow or some kind of bird engraved but this may be scratches.

Nice initial ring there, think they are called signet rings not for sure :dontknow: Think some places had plain rings that they would engrave on for a little extra cost. Nice finds 8-) CARM

Thanks, any idea on a date for this? Does it look Roman?

1st of many (ring) finds Rip_Uk.

Looks 17th C to me, congrats on a good find.

PS. If your searching near Watling Street don't detect near the Roman Road itself. Very little is found next to them, you need to come off them by 500 metres or so & look for the high ground, also check google earth for cropmarks.

Ok thanks for the info. The ring was around 300m from the road. What should I be looking for in the cropmarks?

The ring is not Roman, but much later. If you are hunting Watling street, which was a very busy ancient track way, you have to remember that not all of it will produce finds, you have to find the places along the route were people gathered and traded, or stayed.....When I did the roman road of Deere Street (A1) there were a lot of barren areas, but what I did find was right on the main part of the track it self....keep looking

Crop marks can mean anything, the thing you want to be looking for is water, look for were the road is closest to the water, on high ground.

This type of thing, which shows ancient field systems, this is where the activity is for hundreds of years, often starting in the Iron Age. But you need to find the right timeline, use the clock function button to check every field on every date available (normally about 4-5).
