This summer has been dreadfully hot and DRY. With the clay soils around here, the ground is like a oven-fired brick. Needless to say, I haven't really detected since spring. I tried once this summer, but could barely get the tip of my shovel into the ground. However, driving through an older neighborhood yesterday I noticed a recently-razed lot (waiting to be bought and developed) that had some recent water main work done. We've had a lot of breaks due to the ground shrinking from the dry weather, and this looked like another instance of that. The ground next to the curb was absolutely soggy! This morning, my son motivated me to get us out there -- and we're both glad that he did. Hunting next to the sidewalk in the marshy ground, we found two 1930's Washington Quarters within 10 feet of each other -- a 1938-S and a 1939-D! Our first silver coins!!!! One was found before we broke for lunch, and the other after. We also found a 1938-D wheatie and an as-yet unknown date wheatie. All-in-all, a great day. A pair of silver quarters is a good start in my book
We also found a pair of travel scissors. Not sure of the age but probably around the age of the coins.
EDIT: The second wheatie is a 1937-D. What a tight cluster of dates!
