Promissory Note sounds about right (without doing any research--I'll leave that to PBK since he will be sticking around now). IOU is what this is.

It is considered currency. A promissory note for 50 cents from a city in the state of Maine. Would have to search for a value, but it could have considerable value to a collector of Maine currency depending on the volume of bills like it that survived.

Check with a Maine Coin dealer I would guess. Instead of asking what it is worth, ask them what they want for one if the have a
similar note. I always approach with an interest in buying to get an idea of market value.
