flourescent ballasts

Just wondering if flourescent light ballasts are worth anything and what would need to be done to them? Thanks for replies.

These ballasts are all newer. Our building was built in 2002 and they are slowly starting to need replaced. May end up with about 50 of them. They are all 4 bulb ballasts. Thank you.

I just cut the wires from the fixtures and throw the rest in the tin/iron scrap

Iron worth about .09 cents per pound

#1 wire about $1.00 per pound

#2 wire about .50 per pound

this way would be the fastest and most profitable

They are transformers, throw them in with the motor breakage/electric motors. Scrap steel pays 7 cents and motor breakage pays 20 cents per LB.

The newer ballast do not contain any PCB's and are easy to spot since they are marked so right on the metal casing. If you peel a ballast apart you will find a copper transformer encased in a resin. The resin is usually on the brittle side and can be beat off the transformer. On one end will be an aluminum foil capacitor(s). Some ballasts have a combination aluminum and copper transformer.
