OK, this was found in an area of Northern New York State near Lake Champlain. I have personally found everything from grapeshot to cannonballs to clock parts to modern quarters. Apparently the hole goes all of the way through and weighs about a pound. Any ideas?

If I found it here, I would probably call it a net weight.

I’ve heard stories about “grape shot”
For smaller artillery pieces. The stories mention holes being drilled into some of the shot to cause a whistling effect when fired. I guess it caused additional panic. I have no idea if it’s right for your item, just thought I’d throw it out there.

That would be my guess too. Never seen/heard of an iron/steel net weight, but a pound of iron weighs just as much as a pound of lead. Who knows, maybe they had an excess of steel or shortage of lead?
