Still finding coins at this old farmsite. Interesting enough its the first foreign coin I've found. Any
help on IDing it would be great. Also pictured is my friend, Keith and his first find, the notorious pop tab. Keep on hunting and dig everything I said!!

Thanks,
Fishstank

Re: Foreign Coin

So how old do you think this coin is. The property dates back to 1894.

Thanks,

Thanks,

I have seen the guys here repeatedly ID these Chinese coins over the years but yours is pretty rough and you would need some really strong pics. Probably Ching Dynasty: http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/china/chinaid3.htm

Nice find anyday :icon_thumleft:

Re: Foreign Coin

That is a really cool link that Coins4Cheese posted. I did some research on that site and I think I found something very similar to your coin.

Chinese Cash Coin
Dynasty: Ch'ing (1644 - 1911 a.d.)
Emperor: Kao Tsung (1736-1795 a.d.)
Reign Title: Ch'ien Lung (1736-1795 a.d.)

Can't really nail it down from your photos but from what I can see, this is pretty close. GL in your research :icon_pirat:

Re: Foreign Coin

Yes it looks like a Japanese 5 yen.
You would think because of the age it would be worth something.

They typically might sell for 1- 3.00

cool find nevertheless

Re: Foreign Coin

It is a Chinese coin, but I can't make out the reign name of the king on the one side, and the mintmark on the other. Do think the mintmark is one of the more common marks.
It is pretty messed up. I find holed coins here in Korea, almost everytime I go out. Put that puppy in some pure lemon juice, and swish it around for a couple of hours. (you can take a break every now and then. :laughing7:)
Should cut through much of the crud. Clean with water and a toothbrush to remove the lemon juice film. Probably going to leave it quite pitted, but it is now.....just the pits are not showing being filled up with gunk.
Then post it again. Shouldbe able to tell you what king minted it, and what the mint mark is. Most of the coins are quite common......millions minted. But every now and then there is a variety.....just like we have varieties of our coins here......that is
quite rare. I don't think so, looking at yours. But, it's worth the effort.

Ok I totally devalued the coin by soaking it in lemon juice. Hopefully its not that rare variety. But it does
appear clearer than before so hopefully someone can ID the coin.

Year? Dynasty? King?

All that stuff.

Thanks again for your responses.

I found it! It's a Chinese Empire Qing Dynasty Cash - Ch-ien Lung made from 1736-1795.

It is one of the coins minted between 1736-1795. And it is one of the common types. And, you didnt devalue the coin.
In Asia, the Asians don't mind if the coins are cleaned/look nice. That "don't clean the coin" is a phenomenum of Europe/the U.S. If you had a Dremel buffer, then you could buff the coin with a copper brush - doesn't scratch - and you would have a very nice coin. Now, there are several places where the coin has begun to rust. The Dremel would take that off, but there would be

(continuation) a scuffed place. Would look much better now then before.
Ch'ien Lung is the King's title name. Very common.....but there are a few, same date, same mint, that are of a much higher
value. That is determined by the shape/strokes of each of the different Chinese characters.
The site the other fellow gave you is a good one for finding out when a certain coin was minted/who was the king at that
time. But, to find the different types, then you need more than a general reference.....need some special books.
Good hunting. If you find any more Chinese coins, if you decide to do so, put them up on here, and I will try to see if I can
i.d. them. hikeinmts

Hi,
I had found 3 similar coins in my back flowerbed here in Tucson 15 years ago. Someone told me they were for doing the I Ching. So I threw them in a drawer.( They were mistaken)
Anyway after seeing another post on here about old oriental coins + my interest renewed. I dug out my coins took some pictures ( Which of course I can't find right now.)
My point being my research :read2: led me here. A very good resource on this type of coin.

Turns out
1 from the 1600s a Kan'ei Tsūhō. Japanese
1- a Huang Song Tong Bao minted 1039-1053
1- a Yuan Feng Tong Bao minted 1078-1085

It just amazes me coins that old just laying there to be dug up .
Oh and the value about a buck each.
Happy hunting !
