Read somewhere on this forum about making your own hip/belt mount. If you have the Excalibur II, try this before you spend $50 on a commercial model. Materials cost me about $9 and it took less than a half hour to complete.

Materials:

2" canvas tool belt $5.98
3/4" outside diameter PVC < $1
3 - 1/4" nylon bolts and wingnuts < $2

Cut length of PVC to correct length and use detector to locate holes and drill using 1/4" bit. You can punch the holes for the belt or drill them.

If anyone is interested, I can post a picture. There's also a post somewhere on the forum. I would give the previous poster all the credit for the idea, but didn't find it again.

Take care.

I would like to see the hip mount if you don't mind. Might come in handy.

I did mine with a dive belt.... that allowed me to tether the detector and scoop for quick release. But ..... i found having everything on the straight shaft that was balanced just as light and left me with no concerns with cable damage.

I've read on this forum and others of cable problems sometimes happening when hip mounted..

Just got in and saw your post. Will send a picture tomorrow.

I had cable fatigue with my excal after almost a year using a commercial hip mount. Minelab did a great job in fixing the battery cable , but it took almost a month. Lucky it was still under warranty. I agree with Herb and Dewcan, dont use a hipmount. Get a straight shaft or make one.

Most cable fatigue issues take place at either the coil or the control housing. I chest mount my control housing and loop the cable back across the control housing using electrical tape to secure it (it's soft, unlike zip ties that can quickly fatigue the cable.) I do the same thing along the shaft. So far no problems and it's constantly getting battered by surf and water turbulence.
