I'm sure all you fossil collectors see pics like this all the time but patterns in nature fascinate me and this one is really cool.

Yeah it kind of does. It's just one of the many rocks and things I've dragged home over the year

I think this may be Receptaculites, a calcareous algae. These are sometimes called "sunflower coral," a mis-nomer.

The rows of knobs are the stubs of tubules connecting the two surfaces of the algal colony.
