Based on the back mark, the Scovill button is from the 1850-65 era. Probably not military, but I'm not 100% positive.
 

I believe it is a button from the Berkeley School. Here is a more recent version:

BP39 Berkeley School Cuff Button

There are a few posts of these on MDing forums you can see online. Seems to be fairly uncommon from what I have read.

The best book on dating metal buttons by their backmark is "American Military Button Makers And Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates" by William F. McGuinn and Bruce S. Bazelon. That book shows a photo of your buttons EXACT backmark (SCOVILL MG CO /WATERBURY in raised lettering), and says it was made only in the early-1850s.
