I went out to a new site today, and found the 3 cellar holes from a 1856 map I've been researching. They were totally overgrown, and barely detectable. First target was this coin. I think it's Chinese, but that kinda boggles my mind. Has anyone else heard of these found in Maine?? Spent about an hour trudging thru the woods, and got a button and handful of lead. Fun day, but can't wait until the overgrowth is gone. They are all over the USA. I have three from Michigan.

these were brought over by Chinese in the1800s in Calif.
they used them in their "tent"cities while building the west - the railroads etc
between each other they were legal tender in their makeshift towns - but could not use them with US merchants
they would try and trade them or sell them off as good luck pieces - they are found in just about every state now a days
I found a few when I was a kid in the 70s

I knew about them being in California, I just didn't think they were up here. This was DEEP, in a cellar hole of a early 1800s home. Interesting none the less.

Im in central Maine and found many different foreign coins from England to Japan.......wish I could hear the stories they could tell.

Man those Chinese coins pop up everywhere, and where you least suspect them. I dug one up here in Northern Ohio back in July. Congrats on digging one. :occasion14:

Yeah, the voyage they all make and then to end up "lost" in the dirt.

Congrats on an interesting find! :icon_thumleft:

Personally, finding a coin from anywhere no longer surprises me. While visiting my great grandmother in PA when I was a child I discovered a 1932 East African dime in her dirt driveway (she was from Sweden..no where NEAR Africa! LOL).

BTW, Yes, I still have it some 40+ years later!

Nice coin find, I recall a small reddish brown woven basket probably some imported item from china that my mother has, it used to have coins like that on it, they went into my coin collection as a kid =D
