It's fairly old judging from the patina, you're going to need to get as accurate a measurement as possible ( in 1/100ths of an inch with a caliper is the best ) of the least deformed area.

Sometimes it's possible if there are enough characteristics to determine type, and if you can measure the diameter reasonably accurately. Weight in grains can be used too for some of them.

By the photo it's not a musket ball. For sure a minie ball

Solid base - not a minie. I get that much patina from lead I have fired 15 years ago in my NY soil. Yours looks to be about a .45 caliber.

I found four .45 ACP FMJ bullets and seven cases in the dirt basement of a church built in 1909 in Binghamton, NY. Bullets are not uncommon.

All I can see are 4 rings and a flat base that's why i thought bullet and not ball I don't have calipers but it weighs 15.1 grams if that's any help

That comes out to 233 grains. Right in line for a .45 Long Colt bullet.

That's great that's what I love about metal detecting you can pull just about anything out of the ground and there you go a few months of wondering what you have and boom in the course of a few hours this site has solved the mystery HH everyone and thanks for all the help
