I found this coin while exploring a new site next to a creek in the woods near my home. I've identified it to be a liard from Luxembourg dated 1759-1760.

The problem is I don't know how I should clean it. Normally I just brush away the surface dirt and maybe a little toothpicking if needed but this coin looks quite fragile. Since finding it parts of the dirt has flaked away and I feel that if I remove the dirt on the surface it will wipe off all the detail but if I leave it it will happen anyway.
So what would you recommend I do?

I know the mintage is high but it's still a different type of coin I haven't seen posted on this website before.

Good looking coin, I haven't seen this one before. Since it's not necessarily a valuable coin, I would clean it with peroxide and than apply Renaissance wax on it.

I can't help you with the cleaning info. Surely, someone on here knows, though. pretty cool old coin, congratulations!

Thanks for your help. I like your idea involving the Renaissance wax but I feel the hydrogen peroxide might be too harsh as I don't know if the dirt is the only part of the coin with any detail. If you really think the hydrogen peroxide is a good idea ill try it.

Nice old coin recovery! :occasion14: In its condition, perhaps not cleaning it at all would be best.

I have found hundreds of old coppers that were damaged by the farm soil and cleaning would only make it worse. :BangHead:

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

All your choice peroxide warmed up in the microwave for 30 seconds works for me also a little soap and water some like to keep them as is athers want to clean them for details there is always a risk nut I would personally clean it up being its not a valuable (money) coin but would be nice to display
