Really hard to say as they have been in use for so long. Some of the other members may narrow it down a bit based on how the links are made or adjoined. Wish I could help.:hello:

Any hand-forged iron can be a keeper, even a museum piece. I give such finds to a friend who collects them. Yours may date from later on, but who knows?

I think that is part of the chain used by the crane that lowered that mason jar full of $2 bills and that flintlock pistol down into that 27 inch deep hole .. or was it deeper.. must have been more than the chain could handle. Not sure that is what it is, but certainly a plausible theory.

Soak it in Apple cider vinegar; rinse in fresh water; dry it in the sun or an oven; and, coat it in clear plastic or black plastic paint. Typical chain and ring used on farm equipment--mechanical or manual; also, used on mule full harness gear for puling plows, discs, seeders and so forth. We always kept a few on the tractor for wrapping and pulling fallen trees or stumps. I paid for a lot of college tuition from dollars I earned working on a tractor--mowing, planting new pasture, clearing brush and so forth.

Heres chain I found couple years ago thanks for looking happy hunting
