Metal Detecting
Out again this evening for a few hours to a local farmfield,The site is a 80 acre strip with an old homesite on each end...I have been switching between the two sites for about the last week,a couple hunts back I had found an old axe head at this site, not wanting to carry it around, and the truck parked a good ways off I decided to mark its spot by sticking some corn stalks in the ground around it (yep not the best idea) I continued on till sunset and set out to recover my old rusty iron ,after searching for about 15 minutes I finally gave up on finding it,today shortly before heading home there it was :headbang: I picked up the pace a bit working my way back towards the truck and got a nice solid signal, dig down and out pops a 1916 merc with a mint mark :o....alittle revitalized I decided to hunt for a bit longer,a few signals later I reach to get my digger and :icon_scratch: not there....so I set out hunting for it...after 20 minutes I gave up and headed home.....perhaps I will locate it tomorrow :laughing7:, one thing is for sure, when I do find it there will be some bright colored paint on it next hunt...

Have fun out there folks...

Nice dime, Soupie!!!

Cool axe head, too! Lowbatts found one today as well.

I'm always losing stuff. :-\ Lost an el-cheapo pinpointer once and searched all over for it - no dice.

Two weeks later, I went back to the same woods and there it was, a little wet but otherwise OK. That's why I prefer the Sunray probe. ;D

If you need any detecting equipment, just follow behind me at the hunt and you will be able to stock up! :laughing7:

Nice coin, sorry about ol digger! Hope you find it.

sounds a little like myself, i tend to leave my shovel, towel, pinpointer, etc where ever i dug last :laughing7:

So close,, but still a great looking dime.
Good luck finding the digger tomorrow!

After digging the Merc the digger thought its day was done, you'll find it taking a nap beside the merc hole hopefully.

Very nice teaser!

Got me another axe yesterday before Neil stole the show. It was a few yards from the old stone-lined well.

now go find that digger!

Great hunting bud, man I know all too well about loosing my digger and my old pinpointer!!! Nothing worse than asking my hunting buddies to help look for my lost stuff!!! :tongue3:

I think we've all at one time or another, left our digger at the last plug. Great dime, Soupie.

LB nice Rusty Iron Axe Head, thanks for posting it, I enjoy seeing the rusty relics

I have never had a problem till I bought the X-1 probe,I suppose the process of securing it took the step of saddling the digger...built a new one today, but must recover the other,as the farmer would be mighty mad with that stuck in his tire :nono:

Have fun out there folks....

Hope you find your digger before the plow puts it under.
Nice Merc..

Nice dime :icon_thumright:. Don't worry about losing the digger, done that myself. If people didn't lose things, we wouldn't have this hobby. ;D

Scott, that is one of the sweetest sixteens I have seen

(sorry about the digger. . . R.I.P)

Those 1916 Mercs are always a thrill for a few seconds as you check for the mintmark!

The digger.........has been recovered :headbang:

cool, yea don't think the farmer would be too pleased if it had popped his tractor tire! :laughing9:

Nice Merc. I think they are one of the best of designs. I was always losing my digger also. I found those strips of velcro at Home Depot and wraped a piece around my sheath to wrap around the handle. Works nice and easy.
Like the axe head. That will be a fun one to clean
Thanks for sharing.

Awesome! One of the biggest selling points in getting permission on farm sites is the promise to get all those tire hazards out of the way. While that's not why your there, it brings great repetoire and word of mouth value to the nearby farmers especially if you find a chunk off the discer or other big iron.

As to that merc, yep, WoW!

At one nearby site known as the Eagles Nest we pulled a combined total of 4 1916 dimes, three merc and one barber last year, out of a combined total of around 35 silver, great ratio but none were the D mintmark. Given that ratio alone however it ranks up there for potential!
