Found this at 1800s home that was used as a Civil War hospital. Seems to be made of copper or crude brass, about 3 inches in length and round. Does not appear to be fully hollow, appears to have iron rod thru. Has some detailing near the flared end. Bullets found at site are from CW, the AW Spies backmark button would date 1825-1834.

Nice finds!
My thought was that it might be from the top of a small flagpole.

But it's more likely furniture hardware, maybe a finial from the top of a clock case.

A finial of some sort..lots of possibilities .. one might be the finial to an old cast iron stove topper.

The image sort of speaks for itself, but I'm thinking the keyword is copper

Note: This image is about its actual size (3" inches) before clicking to enlarge it

I'm kind of leaning toward one of these copper roof cupola finials

My thought was copper also, but its not unusual for CSA brass to turn or resemble copper, due to the high copper content.

I think I solved this one, considering the old roof on the house was mostly copper or trimmed in copper, I believe this piece was part of a lightning rod. I dont know why it was found in a corn field pretty far from the old home but who knows. Thanks for everyone's input, if anyone has anything different or agrees, please comment. Thanks.

I don't want to split hairs, but I can't help but wonder if its a Lightning Rod or possibly part of a Weathervane? They are sort of the same but different - and no way I know of to tell the difference. ???
