Found in front yard - Wheat penny

Hi Everyone,

I was killing time while doing laundry and decided to run the metal detector over the front flower bed.

I found two pennies. One is a 1971 penny.

The other was an old wheat penny. The date is hard to read. It is either a 1943 or 1948 copper penny. It has a 'D' mark on it. It is not in the best of shape but still was fun to find instead of watching the washer and dryer.

Where there's a wheat there might be a silver.

It was in my front flower bed. I have used a rototiller on this ground in the past.

There were several iron hits but I discriminated those out.

I also found an old rifle bullet casing. Also, a small rectangular object that looks like part of an old toy or something but registered in the high nonferrous range. Probably aluminum.

Hi Dihren,

I took a picture with my cell phone. The date shows up clearer than what I can see with my middle age eyes. It is a 1948 D.

Too bad it wasn't a 1943. I just looked up the value of that. Apparently, copper pennies were not minted in any volume. They minted in steel due to the war.

Very cool! Yes the 1943 pennies were steel coated in zinc. But a lot of people would often mistake them for dimes, and vending machines thought that they were slugs and rejected them, so they were pretty unpopular. What about the part of the toy? Can you take a picture of that?

Here is the odd piece of metal I think might be from a toy. It might be part of a car, who knows.

The square thing looks like the piece that holds the blade on a wood plane (for shaving wood).

The item is about an inch long
