After following this site for many months I decided one more time to search my house that was built in the 30s. i was told an older lady stashed her money here. Her and all her kids have since passed on. well, I hit the jackpot!! I found her stash, I now have quite a few older 50s and 100s most are from 1950 but a few are 1923 and 1928 and a coupe have stars after the serial number. I don't have a scanner (yet) but I sure could use some help getting a value of these bills. I think it would be hard to trust anyone locally being a real green horn. If anyone has any thoughts or name any books that could help me that would be great. thanks

Ebay is usually a good source of what things are going for just search for your bills on there and watch the auctions.

Where was the stash? How many bills are we talking here?

T.

Congratulations on the cache, many dream of finding something like that. :o Bob

I found them in the basement under the steps behind a board that was loose. looks like 70-100s and 60- 50s. There were others but these are the old ones. I know the star means something I just can't remember what. I have 5 stars total.

Adding to Joe's:
"The star in the serial number indicates that the bill is a replacement for a regular series bill which didn't pass quality control when printed.

There are many error bills available that were misprinted, folded, mis-inked, etc. If those bills had been detected before release they would have been replaced with a star bill.

The serial number of the star bill is not in series with the bill that it replaces.

Although some strive to collect star bills, there is no particular numismatic value to them except as may be derived from an unusual serial number or some other quirk. For instance, an error on a star bill would be a real find since it is hand selected to replace a damaged bill.

Congrats on finding a real stash!! Seeing them on one pic is Banner material.
If you list the bills by Denomination, Series, Signatures and which Fed. Reserve Bank issued the bill, I'm sure many here could give you an idea of their rarity and value.
Don.......

IMO,

I don't think you could get more for them if sold in a lot, or group...

Set 3 or 4 of 'em in a book to protect 'em for your next trip to a big city...
Try 'em out on a couple of coin shops to see what they have to say.

All they need to know is your wife found 'em when going through granny's stuff.

Anyhow,
Good for you!

Supper cash find. Would go out of town to dealer on value only. Do not let them try to buy them from you. Check different web sites too for value. Good luck and keep us posted. Again, great find...

Photo document the spot you found them and the bills. I'm sure you could get nominated for the banner a few times. Include the story behind the house and suspected stash. I'm sure everyone would love to see that. Congrats!

You can post photos of the bills you think might be the most valuable
Some members are knowledgable about paper currency and could give you an idea about value

Man you dont soudn nowhere near excited enough lol. Just found over 10k wow. Congrats. Find a local coin club then take your time ask aroudn about the president and some of the older members that been in the club forever then after you find someone you can trust ask them to help you sell. You might can sell them all within the coin club;-)

I would watch ebay for a few weeks or months to determine what your bills are actually "worth".

Good luck and gratz on the amazing find! You should post pictues of the staircase in which the money was found, so the rest of us will know what to look for!

First off CONGRATS !

I agree with Tested .

Search them on EBay & See what they are Getting
Especially Check the Completed Listings.

Terrific find!!!! Good Luck!

Congrats on your super find...but be careful and don't get taxed out of it....or worse let someone on the internet find out where you live and come home one day to find the house torn apart.

If the star notes are from 1950 series or older they do tend to be much worth more than other non-star notes. I caution you to educate yourself(especially on star notes) before selling them. Some star notes are only a few dollars more than a non-star and some can be worth thousands more.Take 3-6 months to figure out how to grade them and read about them. For $40-60 in books and patience you may save yourself a bundle of cash. The value depends on many things: grade, denomination, series and size of note to name a few.

I recommend "Paper Money of the United States" by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. Get the most updated version at a good coin shop. Also the Banknote Reporter" is a publication put out by Krause. There is also a magazine called Paper Money Values put out by Coin World. I can't say it enough to figure out on your own what you have and not let a dealer tell you what you have.

If you have more specific questions or picture of note I may be able to help you on some notes. You can PM me if you wish.
