I was scouting out a place to metal detect on historic property near Columbia, Tennessee today. I didn't even have the detectors with me because I had already been detectin' and diggin' all day and so I gave the equipment a break. I was close to an old store site which was next to a railroad and I looked down and found this piece on the ground where the rain had washed out an area. I believe this to be a railroad mail tag. I looked up the C & S to see if there was such a railroad. There were two that I found. One was the Colorado & Southern RR which began in 1898 and merged in 1981 with another railroad. The other was the historic Charleston & Savannah RR which played a vital role in the Civil War. It was organized in 1860 and faced bankruptcy after the Civil War. It later merged with another railroad. I will be going back to this site soon and hope to find more stuff.
