Found Santa's lost button

I got out for a couple of hours this afternoon. Sun felt good, still little chilly. But the ground was frozen, about and 1" or 2" was thawed enough to dig. Got a good signal and dug. There on the edge of a dirt clod was this a button. I got it home and cleaned it and to my surprise it wasn't another CW but one that looks like it came from Santa's coat. LOL First time I seen one like this. I'm liking this old home site more and more. The other picture is I think a pin of some type. In the center on the three raised things is either a bird in flight or turned upside down it looks like a crown with and angle line and lines at bottom going up. I found this the other day when I found the 1888 Indian head.

Re: Found Santa's lost button

The button is called a sportsman button. they can have a wide variety of designs on them (hunting or animal) I dug one exactly like yours in a Louisiana camp near Manassas VA. The sportmans buttons can go from the 1830's or so into the 1870's maybe a bit later. The pin I can't be of much help on sorry

Thank you Vayank. So far I know the site is around the 1888 or later. I'll have to get to the County records and see if I can find who owned the land back then and when the house was put on it.
I'm not sure if the one is a pin. I'm just going by the end piece with the partial hole as where the pin part might of been.

Nice finds! HH, Mike

Re: Found Santa's lost button

You're welcome. Darn I need to start looking at those pics a bit better. Does it look like the might have an ear or tab on the other side of the ones that has the hole in it. If so it might be part of a suspender buckle. How big is it?

Re: Found Santa's lost button

What a great button, I've found 4 eagle buttons in the last 2 weeks, but nothing like your sportsman button. good find!

Re: Found Santa's lost button

Depending on the size, the buckly looks like a sash buckle.
Nice recoveries.

It looks like there might of been another ear on the other side. It's been broke off. Also looks like there was something extending out on each side of the pointed thing on the outside near where it curves around that were broke off. There are no marking except for the bird thing. It's 1 1/2" long and 1" from bottom to pointed tip.
I hope this helped.

I think I can see where the other pieces were broken off. I'm not sure what that would have been. Maybe an extension of the buckle like piece. I do believe it is a suspender buckle though because of the ears with the holes on the sides.

I'm not really seeing the suspender buckle because of the pointed part at the top, if it was rounded too and the thing was more solid and not concave in the back, I would say yes. Tho I think it could be a buckle off a purse or maybe shoes. Back in those days they wore buckles on their shoes. No matter what it is, it's still interesting.
