I look through the new posts everyday and I see all kinds of stuff found while detecting and I don't know if it is just me but some of this stuff looks like junk to me that I would just scrap. Don't get me wrong if I find something of interest I will keep it and be proud of it but I find all kinds of iron objects just covered in rust and if it something that I can use I will save it and use it, if not I will chuck it into a big barrel destoned for the scrap yard.

I just don't understand it I guess, finding a piece of an old stove grill or a rusted out piece of rod iron just doesn't seem to be that signifigant to me. If I were to find a whole cast iron stove that was still functional then I would be excited.

I would keep anything that seems signifigant or collectable like bottles, glass insulaters, locks and keys stuff like that but a hunk of rust doesnt seem like something to keep. I suppose I could use electrolosis.

Also what I mean by keeping stuff I could use I mean older tools like saws, axes, hammer heads, screw drivers, old irons, farm equipment, old hooks, jars and chains. I like to reuse stuff that I find if I can. Like axe heads and hammer heads, if they are still in good shape I will put on a new handle and put it in my shed with my others and use it.

I don't know maybe its just me.

Don't get me wrong I like relics but I guess when I see a lump of metal that is unrecognizable I see scrap not a treasure.

Is it just me? Some of this stuff just looks like junk am I wrong? Anybody have any input?

It seems like people think anything is worth money or they found some rare stuff. I guess it really is just me.

It's not just you. I am much the same in that if I have no use for it or I can't hang it on the barn wall and brag about then I don't need it!

I think a lot of people post there whole days finds? Personally it is neat to see some of the "junk" thats found and i have found my share as well on old farms home sites and logging camps. But I like you scrap the majority of it thats to far gone or just pure trash. i don't have room to keep everything for one and the lbs of trash add up in scrap value. Thats my thoughts.

Come on...dont tell me youve never heard "One mans trash is another mans treasure?" :laughing7:

It is treasure to me as well, scrap treasure. There is always a way to make money off found metal.

I do like looking at some of the stuff and trying to help people on the what is it forum but some of the stuff is just junk. Some of the people on here post there daily finds and include all the random crap as well like pull tabs and cans which is cool because they are not leaving that stuff in the ground. The stuff that irritates me is stuff that is part of something or a chunk or iron. Just because it is 100 years old doesnt make it valuable!

I like seeing everybody's junk along with the good finds. It's good to see people cleaning up the ground and taking all the harsh metals/junk out.
You can't dig gold without digging trash.
I do agree with you for the most part though, some crap is just that, plain ol' crap.
I try to be like Captain Planet.....except I have a metal detector and don't crave a multi-racial kid group.

Good old captain planet, he is our hero.

i don't post 3/4 of the stuff i find just the better finds of note

I do as well and hopefully soon I will be back out there and not on here everyday being envious and becoming grumpy and starting posts like this. Cabin fever is real.

Yup, "The power IS mine Captain Planet, thank you for telling me so many times." Lol I'd hope to uncover one of the kid's rings, I'd have some cool ownership over varias elements. I wonder if I'll start posting junk pics too, maybe I'll weigh it. I'd love to email the city and let them know I cleaned up 10lbs of scrap metal from a child's playground hahaha.

I hope you dont dig up the lame ring, heart. LOL

Ya! it's all junk...BUT...as long as it is not a pull tab or a bottle cap it's cool cause I FOUNT IT...what ever it may be.

Just let the imagination go wild, were having fun :icon_thumright:

I have read alot of threads and I think as alot of others seem to think that the shows Diggers, American Diggers and a couple others have made it seem like you can get rich from stuff in the ground. I dont think there is anyone on here that survives on just detecting. I am just guessing comment if I am wrong?

Sometimes it's interesting to see all the junk that someone had to dig to make a good find, but I don't keep scrap that has no real usefulness or historical significance. Any way you look at it, junk is junk. I don't even save anything that isn't copper or brass for recycling. The Iron goes to the scrapper guy that cruises the neighborhood just because I have no place to store it until it adds up to more than the cost of gas to take it in.
