Was detecting on a site that used to have a building on it from the 1760's. The site is near Ocean city, Maryland.

I think the big one is a large cent?

Is the other coin a cut piece of eight? That is my guess but b I have no clue. The one picture of it next to the barber dime is just for size comparison. (Found that today too along with a standing liberty quarter).

Wow! Congratulations! :occasion14:

Thanks! I had a hunch that it was a large cent but I have never found one before. Any clue as to where I can look and find out what type of Reale it is?

the top right picture shows an 'I' next to a flower. the position of the 'I' leads me to believe this is a Charles III 8 reale cut piece. Here's the Wiki page on them. Looks like you're on a great place for colonial finds. I'd work that place over good from every angle possible https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_dollar

Thanks for the help all. After using searching the Internet more I was able to find out that the cut Reale is a 1761 or 1771 Carles the III Mexican 8 reale.

I finally got home and looked at the draped bust cent and I th I no I can kind of make out 17*6 so it's most likely a 1796. I am more then excited to have e found those coins. Never in my wildest dreams didn't I ever expect to dig those up.

I'll assume the cut 8R is from the Mexico City mint. As such, if it were minted during the reign of C-III, then the date range for the 8R was 1772-1789.
If it were from the reign of C-IV, the date range for that 8R mintage would be from 1792 to 1790.

Are you sure those date ranges are correct. When I was looking at images on ebay to match up the reale to I found some 1761 and 1771 C-III 8 reales. I don't know anything about them. Do you have a website you use or another resource that deal with Spanish reales? I am interested in learning more about the coin and it's history.

mxh,
Personally, I use two reference books. One is 'Coins of Mexico' by Frank W. Grove--1981 (about 475 pages )and the other is (and very easy to find) '2013 North American Coins and Prices: A Guide to US, Canadian and Mexican Coins' (22nd edition) David C. Harper, Editor.
Actually, regarding C IV, one of his varieties of the 8R shows the 'IV' expressed as "IIII" --and that mintage extended through 1808.
