Don't know what they are but some are blue and shine very much. Some look weird. Pictures don't do justice to them but maybe someone may know what they are. Thanks.colored rocks 002.webp

Thanks gaspars, I don't know of any volcanos in Va. maybe before my time.

doesnt coal look similar to those black ones?

Thanks borntohunt. They are not black, they are dark blue. The camera is not too good.

Thanks fbthebear. Southwest Va.

Thanks fbthebear. Southwest Va.

I'm in Botetourt County and those look exactly like what we find here. Really cool stuff. We've found colors ranging from black to grey to green to blue. Be careful though they break easily and will cut you like glass.

Hey gaspars ego, think you are right. This is a great website, glad I became a member. Thank you for your reply. I looked up obsidian online and it looks the same to me too.

I was dreging for gold in N.C. and came across the same stuff. The land owner told us the Confedrates made cannon balls there. It was slag from the pot. He even took us up to the old smelting pot in the woods. They lined the pot with sand. The ones I have are blue also. Wasn't MDing back then wish I was.

Thanks wv hilljack. The little research I have done on slag is that it is man made from heating. I dug this out of the ground as I stumbled up on it relic hunting with my metal detector. My MD will not pick up this stuff just by accident I found it. If it is slag how did it get buried in the ground?

Thanks filmiracle, for the info and input. Isn't slag a man made product?

Any find you like is a great find G Freeman. Thanks for sharing...

Well put vpnavy, i have a large slag collection, it may not be worth any money, but it's still cool to me. and pretty!

G freeman what part of SWVA are you in?

yes i agree its slag, obsidian, volcanic glass dosent have the air bubbles pockets, all things become buried with a little time, there are slag piles around my area that are mounds with mature oaks growing from them ,the cobalt blue colored stuff is collectable, some carve the stuff if you can find a piece big enough. some is very beautiful. very cool g freeman.
