Found this taking my grandfather out for a hunt he was interested in the hobby so did some research and found where a old school was in the 1950 torn down now the area was super over grown so had a hard time but this popped up about 2 feet down. 20170504_135747.webp20170504_140020.webp20170504_140030.webp

Friend of mine is an axe collector. He told me he's interested in double bit axes that measure over 13 inches across. Do you see any makers marks on this one you found?

Haven't look over it too well hesitant to mess with it anymore until it dries what's left of the handle is extreme delicate

well..being out here in WA state an ax like that isn't going to be all that old...Logging moved out here in two waves....first with the coastal settlers...no earlier than the 1840's and again as the railroads moved west. they needed a lot of wood for railroad ties. Still a neat find, it has a nice relic look to it.

I figured it wasn't too old I did research on this state and there's not a ton of history here there js a ton of Native indian history going back thousands of years but no so much history outside of that

I was using a double bit like that 40 years ago. They haven't changed much since. So pretty hard to date unless you find the maker. If not super old put a new handle and an edge on it and start swinging away.

My parents bought me a double bit axe and a 36 inch bowsaw for my 12th birthday. 62 now, still have the axe and ALL of my body parts.

Well as always everyone thank you for your input I haven't posted much on here lately pretty much exhausted all my search areas plus I have a phobia of driving so I don't get many opportunities to do much metal detecting and anxiety doesn't help makes asking permission to do hunts on private property difficult because I don't feel comfortable doing so. But again thank you everyone I really appreciate it so much.
