it looks like the head off a carriage bolt to me

I don't think it's a button or military. A head off a broken bolt makes perfect sense.

Possibly, I should have said it's aluminum in post as well

could possibly be the head from a rivet like used on semi box trailers.

Or possible part of a snap off a jacket?
