No idea if it is what you think, but the word you are looking for is "scabbard".

Do you have pics of the ends and something to compare for size?

Hey everyone, thanx for the replys so far. :) DCMatt, I knew there would be someone in here that would come up with the right name to help out an older dude. I love learnin' about history. That word, if not the spelling, was right on the tip of my tongue when I was posting, but I couldn't get it for the life of me. ;D Thanx for the word fix buddy. ;) There's more pics below and I've mentioned the size (roughly) to Trk5 'cause I think he's on to something here... ;)

Dugfinds, this little unit has appearantly been stepped on a number of times which flattens it out more than it would be if not so squashed. So maybe that makes it look too square for you to think of it as being a scabbard? ??? No guess as to what it may be then bud? ::) C'mon now, don't be shy, you're among friends here. ;D By the looks and heft of this thing, I would say it's made of brass... ::) There's another hint right there. :) Check out the new pics and see if you can come up with something. ;) Don't be given up on us just yet there partner. 8)

Michelle, ma belle, don't think it could be one of those, because this rig is fairly old, like maybe even as old as this here writer, :D or even, God forbid, older than that even. ;D Glad to see you folks tryin' though. That's the communication stuff I was goin' on about in one or two of my other posts and or threads on this Fine Forum. ;) Thx 4 the guess. Keeps our minds sharper! ;)

Trk5capt, it's 3 1/2 inches by 1 5/8 , squashed to 1 3/4 on the opposite end to the throat portion and 5/8" thick at it's widest part on the throat, where a blade would fit in? I'll post another pic or 2, but I think you are right on the money my sharp eyed friend. If that's the case are we looking at a keeper or do you think it's too common to bother with? 8)

Here they are Trk5 :) What 'cha think about them apples? ;D

Here are my follow-on thoughts now you have posted more identifing features:

Definately not a scabbard Chape, which is why I referred to the square end.

A scabbard Chape is attached to leather bottom to stop a blade from passing through it.

It could be the Scabbard top which the blade slotted through. However there seems to be no clip or loop for it to be attached to the belt. Is there anything broken off it? (Although some don't have this as the are attached slightly further down the blade to counter balance it.)

In my opinion it looks no more than 100 years old.

Definately think you are right. looked at hundreds (swords, knives, and bayonet scabbards) trying to find a exact match and no luck.

Neat find. :)

Yes a stylized version, looks kinda of art deco period.

Hi Larry,
The good news is you've all nailed the ID. It's part of a sword.
The bad news is that sword is not an antique but an ornamental reproduction. I have the same sword on my dining room wall but it belongs to a friend who's overseas so I don't know the exact origin of it. He collects all sorts of weapons and suits of armour and this one is deffinitely a repro. Sorry. Maybe next time out you'll find the rest of it. :)
I'll post pictures in a couple days. Technical difficulties. ;)

Here's the sword. It needs a serious polishing but I don't want to touch it in case my friend likes the old grungy patina.
I prefer the shiny new look but you should never clean a boy's toys! LOL :D

That's an unfortuately accurate ID. Ontario appears to have been a popular destination for that model. Dang, I was rooting for something more exciting.
