Looks like a pre-form to me. Nice find!

Joel

My first impression is that it's a partially worked 'blank' and looks like it spent a long time in the water. Just my impression though.

As an aside, I heard that 'on the market' a worn piece (usually eroded by water) is worth more because modern knapping can't reproduce that. Just wondering if that's true.

(Sorry central Mo for trying to hijack your thread.)

the thickness of that piece makes me lean towards tool, my guess would be a adze, possibly dalton culture, I have about 2 dozen of those from tn, and they were all found together in a cache. jmho.......nice find

ive found ones like that aslo.im sure mine are heavy duty points.just posted them,or two of them today jamey

Nice find. I was told one time that they made lots of preforms near where they got there flint and took them back to camp to finish. Lot of the preforms after examination had fractures or something that may have prevented into being made into a point or blade. So they would turn it into a digger or a hoe or something like that. They utilized the rock. Who knows it may have been made to be what it is to serve a certain purpose. Its a great find and condratulations.

heavy duty? doesn't look like a heavy duty at all imo.
m. rock star,i trust you take ever thing i say with a grain of salt,4 months under my belt.i just said that cause i find something like that alot round here, real thick but sharp and just say now thats heavy duty.didnt relize they had that style.thanks thrity seven.i did try to type a couple points for the lady in kentucky, not sure if i want to read them responces jamey

Not heavy duty. Joel said 'pre-form', up here we call them 'blanks', all same/same and I agree. WAY too small to be an adze I think (unless they were cutting down willow). That piece spent 100's, or more likely, 1000's of years in the water.

Just my opinion, how about your's.

I'd link this but I cant copy and paste on ps3. If you go to www.paleoworld.com page 16 and scroll down he has two MO adzes that look nearly identical to your piece in shape, size, and material, both are well under 4 inches in length.
