Found this belt buckle at our historic property. Any ideas when this dates from and what it was used for?

Very rusted buckle with single tang.

At that small size, it may have been on some type of horse tack. You may want to put some oil on it to help slow down the oxidation process. Breezie

Thank you very much! It was found about 2 ft underground while fixing an oil line. We have recently purchased an historic home which was in my husband's family for many years. We can't wait to find more treasures! We have come across a ton of old hair pins.
