Many of these rairoad spikes were also used as attachment points for wire fencing on wooden posts. I used to wonder why I was finding railroad spikes out in the middle of the woods, until one day when I spotted an old post with one still sticking out of it!

Yes, they are indeed railroad spikes. Now if you were in a Civil War camp in Virginia, sometimes we would find them there. They used them as tent stakes sometimes.
